WordPress hooks are a central extension mechanism. The examination must distinguish actions from filters, registration from execution, and callback priority from the order in which different hooks are reached during a specific request.

Short answer

WordPress hooks are a central extension mechanism. The examination must distinguish actions from filters, registration from execution, and callback priority from the order in which different hooks are reached during a specific request.

A technical conclusion should distinguish the directly observed state from inferred execution, provenance or causation and remain limited to the documented versions, environment and evidence available for the examination.

1. Distinguish actions and filters

Both use the WordPress hook mechanism but play different roles. Actions provide execution points for registered callbacks, while filters pass values through callbacks that return a value for continued processing.

The distinction matters when reconstructing an effect: a callback that changes a value has a different technical role from one that performs a side effect at an action point.

The examination should distinguish direct observation from reconstruction. A configuration entry, API declaration, registered callback or stored value establishes only the state that was actually preserved; it does not by itself prove execution, causation or historical persistence. Where a relevant historical state cannot be recovered, the limitation should remain explicit rather than being filled by assumption.

2. Capture callback registrations completely

Record the hook name, callback identity, priority and relevant registration conditions. Multiple plugins and themes can register against the same hook, and custom hooks can create additional interaction points.

A list of matching source-code lines is incomplete if conditional registration, class instantiation or configuration determines whether a callback is actually registered.

3. Reconstruct execution order for the concrete path

Callback priority affects ordering within a hook, while the order in which separate hooks are triggered depends on the request and WordPress execution path. These are distinct ordering questions.

Trace the specific user action, request or lifecycle event so that the relevant hooks can be placed in sequence rather than assuming that every registered callback participates.

4. Connect static code to runtime observation

Static analysis identifies possible paths. Runtime instrumentation, logs or controlled side effects can show which hooks and callbacks were actually reached under the tested conditions.

A registered callback is therefore evidence of capability, not execution. Reproducible instrumentation should be tied to the same versions and activation state as the observed behaviour.

5. Test hook conflicts as interaction hypotheses

Where several callbacks affect the same value or state, vary priority or component activation in a controlled manner. The goal is to determine whether the observed result depends on a specific ordering or combination.

A changed result after priority adjustment supports an ordering relationship in the tested path but does not automatically identify which implementation is incorrect.

6. Limit the conclusion to the observed path

Hooks can be conditional and request-specific. A callback observed in one admin request may be irrelevant to a frontend or REST request.

State which request path was instrumented, which callbacks were observed and which potential registrations remained outside the test. This keeps the reconstruction traceable and bounded.

Examination checklist

  • Are action and filter roles distinguished?
  • Are hook name, callback and priority recorded?
  • Are conditional registrations considered?
  • Is the concrete request or lifecycle path identified?
  • Is static registration separated from runtime execution?
  • Are priority and component variations tested where material?
  • Is the conclusion limited to the observed execution path?

Constructed example

Two plugins filter the same value at different priorities. Instrumentation shows both callbacks execute during the failing request, and reversing the order in a controlled test changes the result. This supports an ordering-sensitive interaction without proving that either callback is universally defective.

The example is entirely constructed and does not describe a real engagement, client matter or historical incident.

Critical review and methodological limitation

Hook analysis can easily overstate static findings. WordPress source may contain many registrations that are never reached in the relevant request because conditions, authentication, configuration or earlier control flow prevent execution.

A sound reconstruction combines registration evidence, runtime path, priorities and comparison tests. If instrumentation is unavailable for the historical state, the distinction between possible and observed execution should remain explicit.
